Day 19 – October 20th
“If you want to go after General Kelly, that is up to you. If you want to get into a debate with a four-star Marine general, I think that is something highly inappropriate.”
This is what White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said during her daily press briefing on Friday. This is a symptom of what is wrong in the US right now: Trump’s administration and others that follow him in power seem to think that debating or contradicting someone is “highly inappropriate”. This is the exact opposite stance the Press Secretary should take on this front – debate and healthy communication are the cornerstones of this wonderful democracy. I acknowledge and am sure that General Kelly and his family have sacrificed a lot in his line of work, and am very appreciative of his service. However, his service does not make him invulnerable to criticism or any less accountable for what he says and how he acts.
Trump’s administration has always seeded this narrative that if you are rich enough, or important enough, you should be able to get away with whatever you desire. From his “grab them by the $#&&%” comment to the latest statement about General Kelly from Sanders, this is clearly still the mentality of the administration. This is dangerous and should be acknowledged and stopped.
